Farming
The Melita Farms team believes that underserved communities deserve access to healthy foods.
Food Donation
As a non-profit corporation, Melita Farms works to nourish and feed our neighbors so they can enrich their own lives. As such, we donate a percentage of fruits and vegetables to qualified food pantries and food banks across the Merrimack Valley and surrounding areas.
Our Farm Stand
At our farm stand, you’ll find plenty of fresh produce, from greens for your next salad to hearty vegetables for the day’s evening meal. In line with our mission to serve our Methuen, Lawrence and neighboring communities, we offer convenient shopping hours and reasonable prices.
Please visit our farm stand at 75 Milk Street, Methuen MA just off of Routes 495 and 113 near The Loop.
Food Distribution
Melita Farms’ fruits and vegetables are also available at small markets and bodegas beyond our own retail store, so that produce lovers throughout the region can enjoy our fresh crops. The Melita Farms team believes that underserved communities deserve the same healthy choices as other shoppers—foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, are naturally low in fats and calories, and taste delicious!
About Melita Farms
Melita: Greek for “honey-sweet”
In 2020, we purchased the 55-acre Nimmo Farm that forms the foundation of our philanthropic enterprise. For over 100 years, the farm was operated by the Nimmo family, who cultivated crops, raised farm animals and produced eggs, milk and other goods on the property.
The farm, rechristened “Melita Farms” which means “honey-sweet” in Greek, is undergoing a significant renovation. The work will include a new community garden and farm stand, upgrades to the central barn, and modernization of the family home, which will become a hub for educational and other events, and an enriching farmhouse destination for visitors.
The farm will serve the community by offering both paid and volunteer jobs and internships, distributing wholesome and nutritious fruits and vegetables to area markets and bodegas, providing “pick-your-own” fruit and vegetable outings for groups and families and much more.
Our Sustainability Commitment
Melita Farms emphasizes sustainable farming techniques that help preserve water, soil, nutrients and other valuable resources. Much of today’s croplands are over-farmed and nutritionally depleted, and over-dependence on herbicides and pesticides have also strained farm productivity. Yet at the same time, experts estimate that 1 billion people are undernourished around the world – thousands in our own backyard.
Sustainable farming changes this paradigm by relying on hydroponic technologies, reduced irrigation and fewer chemicals. At Melita Farms, producing safe, nutritious crops using resource-efficient technologies is our top priority. And because of it, our produce is both healthy and delicious!
